London, 26 October 2018: Mizuho International plc (Mizuho International), the London based securities and investment banking arm of Mizuho Financial Group, Inc. today announced the appointment of Suneel Bakhshi as President & CEO of Mizuho International, subject to regulatory approval. Suneel will be replacing Michiel de Jong who will step down after six years as President and Chief Executive Officer. It is anticipated that Suneel will join the firm by January 2019, providing sufficient time to complete an orderly handover.
Michiel de Jong joined Mizuho International in September 2012. During this tenure he has been instrumental in transforming the London Securities business and realising significant business results. He commented: “I am very proud of the progress and results the organisation has achieved during my time as President & CEO. Together we have created a very solid foundation which has been instrumental in taking the business to the next level. I am very pleased that Suneel is to join the business as my successor to take Mizuho International to the next phase of growth and development, and I wish Suneel, the Board and all staff at Mizuho my very best wishes for continued success.”
Suneel joins from London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), where he served as CEO of LCH Group, the global clearing house majority owned by LSEG, for four years until October 2017. He retains strong links with LSEG where he will continue to serve as honorary Chairman of LSEG’s International Advisory Groups. Previously, Suneel served with Citigroup for more than 30 years. His experience included senior roles in Markets, Corporate and Commercial Banking and Risk Management. He has lived and worked in many countries and left Citi as President and CEO of Citigroup Global Markets, Japan.
David Weymouth, Chair at Mizuho International commented: “We are delighted that Suneel has agreed to join our team as President & CEO. He brings to Mizuho International a combination of proven CEO experience, and a track record of successful delivery in global capital markets in top tier global financial institutions. He is passionate in developing truly client-focussed businesses and growing talent. I am very pleased that we have been able to attract someone of Suneel’s calibre. Together with the Board and the Executive Committee, we look forward to working with him in taking the business to the next phase. I would also like to extend my thanks to Michiel for the huge contribution he has made not only to Mizuho International but to the Mizuho Financial Group. His drive, energy and insight will be sorely missed. I wish him the very best with his future endeavours as he pursues opportunities outside of Mizuho.”
Suneel Bakhshi said of his appointment: “It is an honour to have been invited to lead Mizuho International and to build further on the work done by Michiel. London is truly a gateway to global finance and I look forward to working with regional and global teams across Mizuho to innovate in order to best serve our clients.” He added, “It’s also been my privilege to work at London Stock Exchange Group over the last five years and I am delighted to continue to serve as honorary Chairman of LSEG’s International Advisory Groups.”
